Belarus will introduce a digital ruble in 2026: key details

The digital ruble may become part of the payment infrastructure of Belarus as early as 2026, RBC reports with reference to a statement by the deputy head of the National Bank of the Republic Dmitry Kalechits.
“We are planning a step-by-step transition to the full use of the digital ruble, starting with testing basic scenarios as early as 2025,” Kalechits clarified.
What is known at the moment:
— The payment instrument will be used along with cash and non-cash forms of the ruble;
— The project is being implemented with the support of the National Bank of Russia, which suggests possible compatibility with the Russian digital ruble within the Union State;
—The digital ruble is being tested in a closed environment—only certain banks and government agencies have access to the platform; — It is expected that after testing, the retail sector and commercial banks will be connected to the system.
Why is this necessary?
According to the developers, the digital ruble will provide: — reduction in transaction costs, — increased payment security, — increased control over cash flows, — incentive to digitalize the economy.
At the same time, experts note that the widespread introduction of digital currency will require large-scale adaptation of legislation, financial infrastructure and work with users.
